Roll Call has published their list of the Top 10 Most Vulnerable House Incumbents, and it's no real surprise that two California districts are on the list. Dana Rohrabacher's 48th clocks in at number nine, and the 25th, repped by Steve Knight, takes the eighth spot. LEAP Forward has reached out to a potential endorsement in CA-48, but has not finalized a decision yet. In the Los Angeles and Ventura County-based CA-25, however, I believe Katie Hill provides the best opportunity to replace Knight with a candidate who will fight for gun reform in Washington DC.
Hill, like a lot of LEAPers, is a political newcomer that has taken to the campaign trail like a much more seasoned candidate. She's worked as a homelessness advocate and nonprofit executive before being called into politics, and at 30 she's the youngest candidate in the race. In addition to her strong platform on gun violence prevention, her progressive agenda has earned her the endorsement of EMILY's List, NARAL, Planned Parenthood.
Hill has also shown the ability to raise the funds necessary to compete in an expensive market, and even outraised Knight during the first quarter of 2018. If she advances to the general election, she'll be additionally bolstered by the DCCC (who names CA-25 as one of their targets for this cycle) and Nancy Pelosi's House Majority PAC.
Mr. Caforio ran an excellent campaign against Knight in 2016, but lagged behind Hillary Clinton's performance in the district by 13 points. In the current environment, and with this much at stake, LEAP Forward believes that Katie Hill is the candidate that can get over the top, win the district back for Democrats, and bring California-style advocacy for gun safety to Washington.
