Mike Franken (IA-Sen), "Vulnerable Mitch"

Last month, the House did their duty and passed H.R. 8, mandating expanded background checks for all gun purchases, including private sales.

But Senator McConnell has shelved this bill until either President Trump gives him NRA-cover or until Mitch grows a spine and takes a vote.

Getting destructive weapons off our streets and out of our communities IS preventable. And we can do that by passing commonsense legislation.

Now folks, I’ve spent a lot of time in the military. So I understand the kind of training and screening it takes to use destructive, military-style weapons.

Even in the military, personnel are screened in every which way in order to handle these weapons. When not being used, they’re locked away for safety. Those same weapons are available to almost anyone who wants one in America — and that needs to change.

Let’s face it: Dangerous loopholes will allow dangerous people to get their hands on dangerous weapons until Americans act. More than 90 Americans die from gun violence every day. This is a public health epidemic, and it’s time to act.

The vast majority of Americans approve of universal background checks. This is a big deal!
