Michael Blake (NY-15) Statement Regarding El Paso Shooting

I am heartbroken upon hearing the news coming from El Paso, where a domestic terrorist murdered at least nineteen people and injured forty others. I applaud the acts of heroism from the first responders and Good Samaritans who prevented further loss of life.

While we extend our thoughts and prayers to the families and all suffering during this difficult time, thoughts and prayers are not enough. Republicans in Congress must take action. We must take steps to reduce these indiscriminate acts of violence and introduce additional legislative measures to ensure they do not happen in the future. I pledge to work with organizations like Moms Demand Action and other advocacy groups who aim to eliminate gun violence and advocate to close dangerous loopholes in federal law. The Bible teaches that faith without works is dead. It’s time for Republicans in Congress to place a higher value on human life as opposed to their friends in the NRA.

Further, early reports have indicated that the domestic terrorist, now in custody, authored a manifesto which expressed anti-immigrant and anti-Latino rhetoric with other racist sentiments. We must reject white supremacy and denounce words and action promoting it, whether it is coming from the highest office in the land or our neighbors. This language only promotes division in our great nation, and, it is time to unite.

We, as a nation, are better than this moment. I am hopeful for a future where we do not lose innocent lives to acts of gun violence. That said, tomorrow is not promised. Hug your loved ones tonight. Tell them you love them. Then join us in our fight to ensure we don’t lose another life to senseless gun violence because #EnoughisEnough.
