There were guns on our farm growing up: rifles for hunting, shotguns for clay shooting, and pistols for knocking pop cans off of tree stumps. In my family, guns were for sport, not protection and never aggression. As part of responsible gun ownership, we learned safety first.

To me, today, after two mass shootings in less than 24 hours killed 29 people and injured 53 more, safety first means enacting practical laws to reduce gun violence. I strongly support legislation, as do 85 percent of Americans, requiring universal background checks on all gun sales.
