I want my child to grow up in a state where her job opportunities are competitive with the rest of the country. I want her to live in a state that values her healthcare. I want her children to grow up in a state that values clean water and air. And I want the same for all Hoosier families.

Now is the time to end gun violence in America. We send our kids to school with the trust that our children are safe. It is absolutely unacceptable that this trust is violated by the inaction of Congress and the President. Those who are responsible for enforcing our gun laws should be held accountable for the murders of our children in school.

Now is indeed the time to address this issue. When we place our desire for anything over the safety of our children, then we have lost our way.

. I am in favor of gun laws being reformed. I am in favor of very tough registration and ownership laws. A person should not be exempt from background checks when purchasing a firearm. As a foster to adopt parent and school teacher, I have had 7 background checks in the past 2 years, and I cannot imagine why purchasing a gun would have less strict requirements.

People in this country absolutely have the right to bear arms, however, we also need to protect ourselves from those that wish to do harm. I don’t need to explain the type of power that is placed in someone’s hands when they have access to a firearm. We need to ensure that people that shouldn’t have access to that power don’t get it.

While I would never want to take a gun away from someone, I don’t understand the need for civilians to own semi-automatic rifles. These guns can kill hundreds of people in minutes. But I have yet to have anyone tell me a purpose for assault rifles. Do we want the military to have these weapons? Absolutely. Do we want a neighbor who might be struggling mentally or emotionally to have them? No.

Steve is running against Jim Lucas, one of most radically conservative representatives in our Statehouse. His fanatically pro-gun legislative proposals: constitutional carry, the right to carry a concealed weapon on school property, and the right to own a sawed off shotgun, range from unreasonable to downright dangerous.

I believe we start with authorizing an immediate study of gun violence by the CDC, strengthening background checks, outlawing bump stocks and reinstituting the ban on military-style high capacity magazine weapons
