Tennessee bill would dramatically alter the state's handgun permitting system

Among the other differences between the current system and the alternative one, Holt's bill would also allow people renew their permit every eight years. Current law requires renewal every five years.

The legislation also prohibits anyone who obtained a permit under the new system from carrying a concealed weapon at higher education institutions.

That would be different than what would be allowed with the current permitting system. State law allows full-time faculty, staff and other employees to carry concealed guns on campuses.

The bill, HB 1264, was voted out of the Constitutional Protection and Sentencing Subcommittee on February 20 and is now on the calendar to be heard by the full Judiciary Committee on the 27th. LEAP Forward is grading action on this bill and scoring opposition.
