Capital Gazette: Pass Maryland's long gun regulations

No one can definitively argue that if this bill had been approved by this committee in the 2018 session, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, Wendi Winters, Rob Hiaasen and Gerald Fischman would still be alive.

Police have said that the man charged with the death of five members of the Capital Gazette staff last June legally purchased the shotgun used to commit the crime. They have not made clear how he purchased it or where or when.

But it is possible a law like this might have made a difference. It is possible that in applying for a permit, taking a gun safety course and meeting these requirements someone might have noticed something wrong with the man now awaiting trial for five deaths.

Rob Hiaasen, Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith and Gerald Fischman were killed by a gunman in an attack on The Capital Gazette offices last year. LEAP Forward is grading the long gun regulations bill - HB 786 - and scoring support.
