Louisiana House to consider bill expanding "Castle Doctrine" to places of worship

New Graded Legislation

HB 235 by Republican Beryl Amedee would greatly expand the state’s justifiable use of force laws. Current law provides that use of force is allowed to prevent a “forcible offense” against a person or that person’s property, and when committed by someone lawfully inside a “dwelling, place of business, or a motor vehicle.” Homicide is allowed in instances of self defense or the defense of another person in a dwelling or place of business.

HB 235 expands these circumstances to include people inside a place of worship.

The bill has been referred to the Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice.
