New Graded Legislation
❌ HB 235 by Republican Beryl Amedee would greatly expand the state’s justifiable use of force laws. Current law provides that use of force is allowed to prevent a “forcible offense” against a person or that person’s property, and when committed by someone lawfully inside a “dwelling, place of business, or a motor vehicle.” Homicide is allowed in instances of self defense or the defense of another person in a dwelling or place of business.
HB 235 expands these circumstances to include people inside a place of worship.
The bill has been referred to the Committee on Administration of Criminal Justice.
