The 2nd Amendment is our constitutional right. We must promote responsible gun ownership and ensure the mentally unfit do not have access to guns.

I believe that there needs to be a counter to the power that the NRA currently holds. Especially following the tragedy in Florida last week, it is clear that a change in the status quo is definitely needed. If elected, I will refuse any funding from the NRA. I plan to advocate for regulation that restricts the ownership of semi-automatic weapons.

Let me as clear and unequivocal as I can about the issue of guns: they fall too easily into the hands of people who shouldn’t have them, and it is clear that there is a public policy solution given that our gun violence rates are exponentially higher than the rest of the developed world.

Brian Flick

2018 Candidate, OHio House of Representatives (HD-66)

As Justice Antonin Scalia said in July 2012 when asked whether DC v. Heller established an absolute right to gun ownership, “It will have to be decided in future cases what limitations upon the right to bear arms are permissible...Some undoubtedly are…What they are will depend on what the society understood were reasonable limitations at the (future) time”

Like Justice Scalia, I believe Second Amendment rights are not unlimited. The Second Amendment does not guarantee the right to possess assault rifles, large ammunition magazines, kits that enable a weapon to fire at full automatic, or bump stocks. I will propose and/or support legislation that prohibits the possession of these items.

Current officeholder: Paul Zeltwanger

Next election: November 6, 2018

As a US Air Force combat veteran, I believe in common sense gun control that will protect the Second Amendment while making our communities safer. I will protect each citizen’s ability to own and use a firearm for hunting, sporting events, and home security, but I believe that more control and legislation is necessary to prevent guns from being used maliciously by the wrong people. I am in favor of an assault weapons ban, universal background checks, closing gun show loopholes, and banning bump stocks. I support legislation that prevents domestic abusers, stalkers with court-issued restraining orders, and those convicted of violent crimes from owning and purchasing firearms. I am opposed to arming teachers.

I support an assault weapon ban, at the very least. In my view, there’s a lot more we could do. This includes heavily taxing either available guns or ammunition or both, restricting magazine size, or making a more wide-ranging bans to include more guns than just assault weapons.

I ...served over six years in the Army as an Airborne Infantry Sergeant, and have seen first hand in both Iraq and Afghanistan the consequences of the intended use of firearms. I, as much as many others, believe that owning firearms is a fundamental right granted by our Constitution, BUT I also believe that the Second Amendment very much requires as part of that a “well regulated militia.”

Because I wanted to do something directly about gun violence, I have used my law degree to serve the people of Ohio as a Judicial Attorney and Prosecutor. I’ve written court opinions upholding reasonable gun regulations against baseless constitutional claims. And, I’ve taken action to prosecute violent criminals who illegally possess and use guns.

As with all of our constitutional rights, we need to be careful to maintain the right, while protecting the community. Thomas Jefferson said, “My right to extend my arm ends at your nose.” If our right to guns causes other Americans to lose their right to life, we need to examine the laws with an eye to bringing that right back into balance.
