To be clear, I am not coming to take your guns. I do think that gun owners should be responsible and if they aren’t, they should be held accountable.I have no illusions. This is not only a Republican problem. Democrats are just as responsible. There are many who have been in office for well over a decade who have done nothing to address the issue, but like to pretend otherwise. The General Assembly cares more about being reelected than they do about their constituency. They have shown time and time again they are not willing to do the hard work required to keep us safe. Voting against one thing is not the same as fighting for the other. We deserve better. Our children deserve better.I am a Mom and I am angry and I am coming to take your job.
As a parent, watching these tragedies unfold in our nation’s schools has been quite difficult. Every day, my wife and I send our kids off to the bus stop for the school system (read our government) to teach them, and then, most importantly transfer custody of our children back to us at the end of the school day. Of all of the unwritten contracts that have been drawn over the years between the taxpayer and the government, this one in particular is of paramount importance. Our governmental officials are not fulfilling their contractual obligation. We have lawmakers at current who are either complicit and on the payroll of the gun lobby, willfully ignorant as they covet these same campaign contributions, or heartless. This is not what our government is supposed to represent. The government is supposed to be …of the people, by the people, and for the people; not the will of the largest campaign contributor, corporation, or Super PAC.
Weapons of war have no place in the civilian world. A ‘well-regulated’ militia includes universal background checks, longer waiting periods, more stringent licensing, training & re-certification regulations.
As an Iraq and Afghan veteran, I am well familiar with handguns and rifles. The military has taught me to respect their deadly effects and handle them with due care. As a combat medic, when I recognized signs of distress with my fellow soldiers, my first priority is to remove potential risks such as weapons from their immediate vicinity and such was the norm in the military. Weapon has one purpose: to kill. We as South Carolinians must be responsible for our fellow citizens’ wellbeing by make sure all bearers of weapons to be properly trained, properly educated and properly documented. When elected, I would fight against all legislation that put South Carolinians at risk.
